At Conscious Capitalism of Central Maryland (C3MD), we believe business can and should be a force for good. Our recent Food for Thought session, Where Culture Closes the Deal, brought that belief to life through a powerful, human-centered conversation.
With a discussion led by Wendy Slaughter and moderated by C3MD Board Members Tracy Turner and President Camille Mazelev, the event explored what it really means to build a conscious culture and why it matters now more than ever.
We were joined by Wendy Slaughter, Maria Villani, Rocky Brown, and Donna Weaver of The Wendy Slaughter Team at Samson Properties, who shared how they put people, purpose, and community at the center of their work.
More Than a Transaction
In real estate, success is often measured by numbers. Deals closed. Listings won. Revenue generated. This conversation challenged that mindset from the start.
“We are humans before we buy houses,” Tracy Turner said.
For Wendy Slaughter and her team, that idea shapes everything they do.
“It’s not about the real estate,” Wendy explained. “You have to be excellent at real estate… but once that’s checked, it’s really just about other things.”
Those “other things” are what define conscious culture. Empathy. Trust. Awareness. A real effort to understand what people are going through during major life transitions.
“It really just goes back to understanding what people need,” Wendy said. “That’s all it is. It’s not rocket science.”
Awareness Is the Work
A key theme throughout the conversation was awareness. Being present. Paying attention. Noticing what others might miss.

“You just gotta be aware, right? Conscious,” Rocky Brown said.
That awareness helps the team recognize that every client situation carries something deeper.
“Everybody’s different,” Wendy said. “It’s really something else that’s happening.”
Whether working with relocating families or clients navigating loss, the team approaches each situation with care and intention.
Relationships Over Transactions
The panel returned again and again to one idea. Relationships drive results.
Maria Villani put it simply:
“They really are people… not just a number. And it comes back tenfold, because people remember that.”
She described how the team shows up beyond the transaction.
“It’s more than just the service of being a real estate agent. How did we help them? How were we a listening ear for other things in their lives?”
This approach builds trust and long-term connection. It also drives business outcomes.
As Donna Weaver shared, 93% of the team’s business comes from referrals. That level of loyalty reflects consistent care, not marketing tactics.
A Culture That Shows Up
The Wendy Slaughter Team does not just talk about culture. They live it.
“We’re different, we’re unique, we like to have fun,” Donna said. “But putting people before profit is probably at the top of everyone’s mind on this team.”
That mindset extends beyond clients. It includes partners, vendors, and the broader community.
The team actively supports local nonprofits, participates in volunteer work, and invites clients to join them. The result is what attendee Mallorie Kristoffersen described as an “ecosystem of care.” Instead of simply writing checks, they invest time and energy. They show up.
No Template. Just Intention.
One of the most important insights from the event was this. There is no single blueprint for building a conscious culture.
“It’s not generic,” Wendy said. “It’s so unique to the industry and the person.”
The starting point is clarity. Know your values. Understand what matters to you. Then build from there.
Her advice was simple: Start small. Be intentional. Be yourself.
“Just lean into being fully you,” she said. “Don’t wear a mask.”
Culture Closes the Deal
The takeaway is clear. Culture is not separate from performance. It drives it.
When businesses prioritize people, relationships, and community, trust grows. And when trust grows, so does the business.
As Tracy Turner reflected:
“That is like the epitome of giving back… creating a space for someone to thrive, and they never even asked for it.”
That is conscious culture in action.
At C3MD, we are proud to create space for conversations like this. When leaders come together to share how they build with intention, the impact goes far beyond business.
Because when culture leads, everything else follows.
