On Thursday, September 12, 2024, C3MD attendees gathered for an in-person discussion about AI and how it is everywhere! Some people love it, some fear it. Some companies are profiting greatly, but what does it mean to their stakeholders? How does one “consciously” use AI? What is AI’s impact on workforce development? on the environment? on small business? These were the highlights of conversation at this month’s networking and panel discussion.
This month’s Conscious Cocktails event was hosted by C3MD member Jeff Agnor of the Law Offices of Davis, Agnor, Rapaport & Skalny in their beautiful new offices. We can’t thank Jeff and his team enough for not only the use of their space, affectionately referred to as “Bar None,” but also for donating the refreshments for the evening as well!
Panelists at the discussion included Paul G. Hylenski Jr., founder & CEO of Quantum Leap Academy and new C3MD board member, Vance MacEwen, co founder & CEO of Greatest Possible Good and an Entrepreneur in Residence at the Maryland Innovation Center, as well as Intelligence Specialist Matt “Archie” Archibald, who’s background in Cyber Intelligence, Organizational Psychology and more to the panel. The panel was moderated by C3MD President Camille Mazelev.

It may seem like the discussion about AI being used in the workplace is a new, hot button issue, but the truth is that AI has been around for decades. The grammarly app you rely on to check your grammar is AI, as is the handy “Siri” feature on your phone, and the chatbot you talk with on the computer instead of calling customer service. Now, because of the huge success surrounding platforms like ChatGPT, there is a pressing need to understand how AI works, what benefits and determinants it brings along with it, and if it’s possible to be a conscious user of the technology. There is much to discuss around this topic, and what better way to begin than by asking some of the experts in our C3MD community.
Matt “Archie” Archibald:
Archie served in the Canadian Army for 13 years as a signals intelligence specialist, including combat tours to Afghanistan and four years on exchange with the National Security Agency, where he was the founder of both the Coalition Support Cell and AFPAK Area Studies training curriculum. After his retirement, he has worked in a variety of management positions within defense and technology companies, including a three-year deployment to Afghanistan (from 2017-2020), leading PAE’s National Maintenance Strategy training program.
He formerly led talent management for the Cyber Intelligence & Services business unit of Raytheon, focusing on both internal and external cyber talent development initiatives. He holds a Ph.D. in International Relations and National Security Studies from King’s College London and is currently pursuing a second doctorate in Organizational Psychology. He continues to lecture on a variety of subjects ranging from Critical Thinking and Structured Analytic Techniques to Afghan History. He is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and trainer.
Paul G. Hylenski Jr.:
Paul Hylenski is a seasoned entrepreneur and leader, dedicated to the ethical integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in business. As the Founder and CEO of Quantum Leap Academy, Paul has made significant contributions to advancing AI education, empowering individuals and organizations to harness the technology responsibly. A recognized thought leader, Paul has delivered three impactful TED Talks and authored five books that explore the intersection of AI, business ethics, and leadership, inspiring leaders to innovate while staying true to ethical principles.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Paul is deeply committed to supporting veterans in their transition to civilian careers, leveraging his own experience as a Marine Corps veteran. His work reflects a broader mission to use AI as a force for good, ensuring that technological advancements contribute positively to society.
Vance MacEwen, MA, MBA:
Vance is an Entrepreneur in Residence at the MIC and co-founder CEO of Greatest Possible Good, a design thinking firm for social good. AI is not his background; rather, it’s something he is witnessing the impact of while working with hundreds of startup founders. He is directing an indie video game about indigenous land defense where every character is written and owned by somebody who shares their background. He recently became the Strategic Director for SOSGlobal, a sustainable fashion startup that fundraises for local climate action orgs.
