What does it truly mean for a business to serve a higher purpose? That question was at the heart of a recent discussion hosted by Conscious Capitalism of Central Maryland and featuring Funlayo Alabi, founder of Shea Radiance, who shared her powerful journey of building a mission-driven skincare company rooted in empowerment, resilience, and community impact.
Funlayo’s story began in her kitchen, where she developed shea butter-based skincare products to solve her own skin challenges. What started as a personal solution quickly grew into something much larger. Through her work, she discovered the deep cultural and economic significance of shea butter production in West Africa, where women harvest and process shea nuts into what is often referred to as “Women’s Gold.”
“… in these regions, shea butter is called women’s gold. And that’s one of the reasons it touched my heart. It’s called Women’s Gold because the proceeds women make from selling the nuts brings in income… and this is money the woman gets to keep.”
After visiting rural communities where shea butter is produced, Funlayo recognized that the greatest need for these women was not charity, but access to sustainable income. “These women don’t want anybody’s donations, they want business partners!” she said.

With this realization at the forefront, Shea Radiance evolved to meet that need by forming direct, fair-trade partnerships with women producers, creating a supply chain that supports both high-quality product sourcing and meaningful economic empowerment.
Like many entrepreneurs, Funlayo’s path was not without challenges. Following a major retail launch with Target, her business faced significant setbacks that nearly forced her to close. Her turning point came when she connected with the Conscious Venture Lab, an economic development accelerator run by HCEDA in 2014, which provided investment, mentorship, and a framework for operating as a conscious business. As Funlayo puts it, “… The Conscious Venture Lab helped me realize that there was a business structure around what I was organically doing.”
The experience reinforced her commitment to stakeholder-focused decision-making and long-term mission alignment.
Today, Shea Radiance continues to face external pressures, including tariffs, supply chain disruptions, and shifting funding opportunities. Despite these obstacles, Funlayo remains focused on creative problem-solving and financial resilience while preserving her company’s purpose-driven culture. Her people-centered leadership style emphasizes care, connection, and shared commitment among her team. “We’re a small size company and everyone knows what their jobs do to impact the supply chain, and everyone knows and is really invested in making sure that what we put out into the world delivers love and care.”

Looking ahead, Funlayo envisions eventually transitioning out of Shea Radiance by selling to a mission-aligned buyer and dedicating her next chapter to investing in and mentoring emerging entrepreneurs. She also hopes to share her journey through writing and continued advocacy for purpose-driven business.
Throughout the conversation, Funlayo emphasized that sustaining a higher purpose in business requires intentional self-care and maintaining personal joy. By prioritizing daily grounding practices, she believes entrepreneurs can remain present, resilient, and effective while building businesses that serve both profit and people.
Funlayo’s journey is a powerful reminder that businesses can be vehicles for meaningful change when they are built with intention, community, and purpose at their core.
“I found the entire discussion so meaningful and inspiring,” said meeting attendee and Board Member Maria Villani of C3MD partnering sponsor The Wendy Slaughter Team @ Vybe Realty. “It is easy to get distracted with the doom and gloom of our current world. To find joy and purpose in community makes the work that much more important and fulfilling.” Specifically, Maria was touched by Funlayo’s commitment to not only her business, but also the community who sources her product. “It’s so refreshing to see women in business who are also forward thinking with regards to the future of their company, mentorship, and ‘paying it forward’ with lessons learned, wisdom, and a bit of levity sprinkled in there as well.”
Thank you to Funlayo for sharing her experience with C3MD. We wish you and your team at Shea Radiance all the best!
